  1. Period of geological time 65-1.8 million
  2. years ago, divided into into five epochs:
  3. Palaeocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and
  4. Pliocene. During the Tertiary, mammals took
  5. over all the ecological niches left vacant by
  6. the extinction of the dinosaurs, and became
  7. the prevalent land animals. The continents
  8. took on their present positions, and climatic
  9. and vegetation zones as we know them became
  10. established. Within the geological time
  11. column the Tertiary follows the Cretaceous
  12. period and is succeeded by the Quaternary
  13. period.
